TimCat, Dave Roz and I went to what is often called the best pizza spot in all of Michigan. It was not the best pizza I’ve ever had, but the whole experience was really good.

It’s a little ways from work, so we called the order in ahead. We got two small four-piece pizzas, one pepperoni and one ham and pepperoni, plus ravioli, lasagna, Cheese Bread and some side salads.

The food

I did not think I was going to leave there thinking the ravioli was the best thing on the whole menu, but it was amazing. Filled with meat, great sauce, and I added a little parmesan and pepper. Just excellent.

The pizza was a bit heavier than I thought it would be and not as airy as I typically like a Detroit-style pizza to be. It was more crunchy. It’s definitely high-quality stuff, just not my favorite.

We also got the Cheese Bread, which was actually really good and arguably better than the pizza. The cheese was excellent and it wasn’t as crispy as the pizza.

The salad was just basic lettuce, but it came with a really good homemade vinaigrette that I could drink.

The lasagna was the worst thing on the table. It didn’t do anything special and wasn’t nearly as good as the pizza or the ravioli.

For everything we got, we spent about $78 and had a ton of leftovers between the three of us. I’d call that slightly on the pricey side, but nothing unreasonable.

The vibe

The place opened in the 70s, so it’s very outdated and nostalgic in a way. Good vibes and good service.

One of the really cool things is the wine. You get a bottle of Chianti, and when you finish it you get to sign it or decorate it, and they hang it up on a string around the restaurant. There are hundreds of them, if not thousands. We couldn’t do that on a lunch break.

It was great catching up with TimCat and Dave, talking about happenings at work and whatever else came up. I go bug them once a day at work even though they’re on the other side of the office from me. They’re good people.

The parking lot is old. Dave drove, so I didn’t check out the handicap spots, but I believe there were three or four of them.

Everything was flat in there, and getting in the door wasn’t a big deal.

I anticipate the bathroom would be somewhat easy to get into, but it may be difficult to get in a stall because of how dated the building is.

The verdict

Two and three quarter wheels.

Overall the experience was great, the service was great, and the food was pretty dang good. I can’t see myself going back for lunch because of the distance, the price, and it not being the best pizza I’ve ever had.

If I’m ever in the area after work, I’d really enjoy taking more time there, trying some different things on the menu, and getting a bottle of Chianti to sign and hang up.

Really, really good spot and I’m happy I got to try it. That’s about all I got for you. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter to get these reviews in the future and support my little food journeys around the area of Troy, Michigan.
